Deadly Lessons : Finnish School Massacre

The "Lonely Rider," as 18 year old Pekka-Eric Auvinen was called, shot dead five boys, two girls and the headmistress of Jokela high school near Finland. Auvinen rampaged through the school screaming "This is the Revolution, this is Hell." He also tried to set the building ablaze. A suicide note revealed his hatred of society.
He shot himself and later died in hospital.

Some of the dead had been shot at least 20 times, the officer leading the investigation said. Auvinen fired his .22-calibre handgun 69 times, but had taken some 500 rounds with him. An earlier school shooting occured in 1989 involving a 14-year-old boy who killed two other students apparently for teasing him.

He posted his hate-filled Internet postings and intentions on YouTube under the user-name, Sturmgeist89 (Sturmgeist means "storm spirit" in German). One posting called for a popular uprising against "the enslaving, corrupted and totalitarian regimes" and appeared to anticipate a violent attack.
was a prominent YouTube user under the usernames "NaturalSelector89" and "Sturmgeist89", and often got into arguments with other video bloggers.

One user, "AmazingAtheist", had provoked Auvinen to follow up with his homicidal threats shortly before the killings. "AmazingAtheist" later posted a statement excusing his comments as a common feature of their exchanges. He revealed that the killer sent him an apology on the day of the killings, and also suggested the blame lay in Auvuinen's recent relationship breakdown.

Pekka-Eric Auvinen was a social outcast, who was bullied and felt cast out by fellow pupils. He posted his intentions on YouTube under the user-name, Sturmgeist89. His various manifestos, included a "Manifesto of a Natural Selector".

The Times of London reported today that Auvinen may have been in contact with Dillon Cossey on the Internet before the shooting. Cossey, a 14-year-old home-schooled Pennsylvania student, admitted to American police last month that he had planned a Columbine-style attack at a suburban Philadelphia high school.

authorities searched his home and found a stockpile of weapons, including a rifle, roughly 30 air guns, and a range of knives and bomb-making books. Police also found videos of the Columbine attack and notebooks filled with violent writings.

Hundreds of children were panicked at their middle school in Kirkkonummi in southern Finland Friday after learning of an online threat that their school would be the next target for a school shooting. Students were informed in class of the threat against their school. Students were allowed to leave with parental permission and regular classes were suspended.
Saari, a friend of Pekka-Eric Auvinen, played virtual war games with each other on the internet. Saari described as "weird and silent," went on to
slaughter 10 people at his college in Kauhajoki, Finland in September 2008.
