@CKinfidel You've got a point. Maybe if George W. Bush had grown up in a shack in the Mississippi Delta instead of having trust funds and legacy admissions to Yale and Harvard handed to him, he might have amounted to something more than a drunken frat boy and the Worst President Ever.

Oh what a blessing this is. Hard work and a dream. Tha t IS America. the OWS is a socialist agenda wraped in nazi/communist blatherings in a time journailists are trying to tar and fearther a graduate of morehouse, wilth 12 year old sexuallies. God bless this family and families like them who know how hard one must work and sacrifice but the American Dream though fading is still alive.

@dirtyal83 And Alex paid her back right? :) if not, hit me up I'll give her 3.50.

My grandmother is the niece Alex borrowed the $2.50 from. Great story!!

the impossible becomes possible; I can think of a few families where that did not happen.

This is among Kuralt's finest features and instills the kind of confidence you need to have in America when we mistake our government for our people.

@phantomsuccour -- I do indeed hold two of the more than 37 degrees represented. However, most important to me is the legacy of faith that my grandparents instilled in us. Without God and His Son Jesus Christ, all those other things mean nothing to me. Thank you all for the kind comments and support of our family.

@phantomsuccour -- SO true! no coincidence that ALL NINE children went to & graduated from college - many of them elite institutions!!
but in addition to a college education, mr. & mrs. chandler, amazingly, educated their children in love, perseverance & faith -- a lesson that seems to have gotten lost in today's generation!

what an inspirational family! they are the model that more families (mine included!) should strive to emulate! i'm speaking to myself here, too, when i say that as the years progress, we are raising children to be self-centered, materialistic & shortsighted.
few of us truly even know the meaning of hard times, lack, struggle & through it all, how to come together as a family unit to do what the Chandler family has done so magnificantly -- persevere!
their legacy leaves me speechless!

Education eally does open doors.
Thanks to whomever posted this. I was a broadcast journalist for 22 years and I had an opportunity to meet Kuralt. I can say without eqivocation, this is one of the finest reports by one of the finest reporters ever to work in broadcasting. If you're involved in this industry, soak this story in. It's not only a great story...but it's a great telling. Thanks again.

This story first aired Thanksgiving Day 1978. I was a young reporter in Nebraska and saw it on the CBS Evening News broadcast that night. It was then and I beleive still remains, one of the finest broadcast news pieces ever. It shows the potential (lost unfortunately now) of television to share stories of real people and through them, to learn about each other.
