Mar 22, 2009 Winter Thunderstorm in ND - rare!

Thunderstorms are quite common in North Dakota, but this is not the time of year for them. Strangely, this one was quite bad which makes it even more unusual. Yes, that's snow on the ground and it's raining (borderline sleet). There is a flash, from lightning, and, 2 1/2 seconds later, a 60-dB-loud thunder clap, which actually knocks out the power for a half second. This is probably the strangest combination for weather I've seen in my area. Sure 17 1/2 seconds isn't much, it's enough to give you the idea.

The power went out. In March, it's very rare for thunderstorms to be present. Even in summer, where T-storms are common, it's rare for the power to be knocked out. I just happened to be lucky and lucky further as I had my camera recording at the time.

I'm about 200 miles to the west of that area (Fargo). I actually forecasted this - lots of snow from snowstorm after snowstorm, and a quick melt later in the year was likely going to cause flooding. It seemed inevitable....

@ulillillia Where I live the thunderstorms usually knock the power out. My town just sucks.
