@lotzoso - I didn't think we had coyotes this far east either, but we do. We have a pack of about 5 around my area. Now I never let my dogs out at night alone. I always take my 9mm pistol with a laser sight or my shotgun with me. I've read that they will go after intact male dogs, which 2 of mine are. They'll literally try to rip their testicles off. It's some kind of pack dominance thing. I also keep the rabies shots current as well.

My friends greyhound got baited in like this one night at a cookout and was attacked by 4 coyotes just outside of the clearing in the woods until Blitz my german shepherd stepped in. It scared the hell out of us. The greyhound injuries (broken jaw) cost my friend over 500 bucks. Blitz chased them off and was bitten in the rear leg which required 12 stitches. Needless to say it was an unforgetful night. I didn't even know we had coyotes in the area.
