Learn how to give a chair massage with this massage techniques video. Expert: Renee French

Video transcript:

"Hi, my name is Renee French and I'm here at Practical Massage Therapy in Nashville, Tennessee, and I'm going to be talking about massage therapy.
So, once you have your massage chair and your client, you just want to make sure that they're in a comfortable position, that their spine is nice and long, the shoulders are relaxed, and the neck is long as well. So, once you see that they're comfortable, you want to get your posture so that your body is upright, and you're not hunched over the chair. In this position you've got good angle to work on the shoulders, you can even use the forearms to get some nice pressure on the shoulders, and I really like to find the edge of the shoulder blade here and then use the elbow to give some pressure point work. This is really nice to release some tension. And you just work down the spine of the shoulder blade, and then you can come back up around the shoulder. This is a nice angle to do some of the shoulder rubbing and squeezing. And then you can take the palms of the hand and walk down either side of the spine, making sure to stay off of the spine itself. You can walk back up, and then return to the shoulders. On a massage chair it's really great too, you can come to the neck here, holding the top of the chair, just for extra support, work on the neck, you can work at the base of the scull, you can even come around to the top of the chair and, using your fingertips at the base of the skull, apply pressure; this is really nice to help relieve any tension. You can work on the head and the scalp here, and you can even press down on the shoulders from this position. It's also really great, you can work on the side of the arm, and just, whichever side you are on, you can do some kneading, down the arm, and then make sure to do the other side. It's always nice to kind of return back to the shoulders. This is such a great position to release any back and shoulder tension. And then it's nice to have some closing strokes that are just clearing the energy, and just to let the person know that you are finished."
