The melody was composed for the 1959 Brazilian film "Black Orpheus" by Luiz Bonfa. It became an instant classic. Also called "Carnival" or "Theme From Black Orpheus", the melody was used for the English song "A Day In the Life Of a Fool".
The Los Indios Tabajaras were native South American Indians who happened to find a tourist's lost guitar in the jungle, and went on to become a guitar duo in the grandest concert halls of the world.
Joan Baez sings Portuguese lyrics by Maria here, in what may be a definitive vocal.
In the movie it was just played briefly with a simple solo guitar.
