December 7, 2011 marks the 70th anniversary of the bombing of an American naval base in Hawaii by Japanese aircraft, signalling the United States' entry into World War 2.

At exactly 7:55am on that fateful day, Japan awakened the American "sleeping giant," bombing the US Pacific Fleet anchored in Hawaii. In two hours some 20 ships were sunk or damaged and 164 planes destroyed.

Of the 2,400 who died, nearly half were killed in a matter of seconds aboard the giant USS Arizona battleship, when a bomb detonated the ship's munitions depot, igniting a conflagration that burned for three days.

Denouncing "a date which will live in infamy," president Franklin Roosevelt declared war on Japan, leading the United States into the Second World War at a time when many of his countrymen had hoped to avoid the conflict.

Three days later, Germany declared war on the United States. The US entry was to change the course of the conflict.

  • 20 years on hiroshima not gave a fuck about

  • I was going to make a conspiracy theory comment, but then I took an arrow to the knee...

  • Selfatack to attack, old strategy

  • @WEREFEAT I agree

  • Es zittern die morschen Knochen,

Der Welt vor dem großen Krieg,

    Wir haben den Schrecken gebrochen,

Für uns war's ein großer Sieg.

  • Wir werden weiter marschieren

    Wenn alles in Scherben fällt,

Denn heute da hört uns Deutschland

    Und morgen die ganze Welt.

  • Und liegt vom Kampfe in Trümmern

    Die ganze Welt zuhauf,

Das soll uns den Teufel kümmern,

    Wir bauen sie wieder auf.

    refrain

Und mögen die Alten auch schelten,

So laßt sie nur toben und schrei'n,

Und stemmen sich gegen uns Welten,

    Wir werden doch Sieger sein.

    refrain

  • Wir werden weiter marschieren,

    Wenn alles in Scherben fällt;

Die Freiheit stand auf in Deutschland

Und morgen gehört ihr die Welt.

Sie wollen das Lied nicht begreifen,

Sie denken an Knechtschaft und Krieg

    Derweil unsre Äcker reifen,

    Du Fahne der Freiheit, flieg!
