(Joe's POV)
I tried to yell at someone to tell me what was going on, but they kept telling me to step out of the way. It's the scariest thing in the world. Not knowing if the girl you're so in love with is going to live or die. I leaned against a wall and dropped back down to the floor, burying my head in my hands and covering my ears. I couldn't take the sound, the long beep. I don't know how long I sat there praying Demi would be okay. But one thing finally caught my attention. The beeping had changed...it was slower and it wasn't bare. It was an actual beep. I immediately stood off my feet and ran to Demi's side.
Joe: Demi! Demi! Is she okay?
The doctors sighed in relief.
Doctor: She's very lucky you woke up when you did, she's stable but she needs to stay overnight for observation. We need to run some tests to find out what went wrong. Joe: When will you know? When will she wake up? Doctor: We should know in a few hours and she should wake up soon, we put her on medicine to make her sleep but it shouldn't be too long. Call for me if you need anything or if anything seems off. Joe: Yes, thank you very much. Doctor: *nods*Just doing my job.
(2 hours later)
I napped for a while but I woke up only a couple hours later because the hospital chair was so uncomfortable. Demi was sound asleep still, her beautiful creamy cheek resting on her pillow. I sat for a few minutes...just watching her sleep. She seemed so peaceful and innocent. It was the only time where the world didn't seem so cruel, when she slept quietly unaware of what had ever happened to her. A few seconds later, her eyes were still closed, one corner of her mouth had curled up forming a smile; crooked. Barely visible, but still there.
Demi: You know its creepy watching people sleep like that.
I let out a laugh, her eyes were still closed, how did she know?
Joe: I..I wasn't, I was just...you really scared me...and how did you know? Demi: *opens her eyes slowly*I'm sorry. *smiles*I can sense your presence. Joe: Don't apologize. Wait...you're calling ME creepy? Demi: *laughs lightly*Kiss me.
I got up and sat beside her on the bed, leaning down to kiss her pale lips. She looked so fragile, so weak.
Demi: Listen Joe... Joe: Yeah? Demi: The doctor...when he comes in here to talk to you about me...whatever made this happen, I don't know. But when he comes in here he is going to tell you something. And I want you to promise me you won't freak out, okay? Joe: Demi, what's going on?
The doctor came in right on que, hearing Demi had awoken from one of the nurses.
Doctor: Good morning, Demi. I'm Dr. Thomas. Demi: Bonjour. Doctor: Parlez-vous français? Demi: Un peu. Joe: *laughs*What did you say? Demi: Just that I could speak a little French. Joe: I didn't know that. Demi: I've been studying the book. Joe: *smiles* Doctor: Well, I have good news and bad news. Joe: Bad news first. Doctor: Well the bad news isn't all that bad, you just have to go back on your medication...just for about a week but no longer than that because it will harm the good news. Joe: Which is? Doctor: Well, we know what happened. At first it seemed like your new heart wasn't adjusting properly but that isn't the case. You're heart is okay now, but the reason why this happened is because your body is under a lot of stress right now because you are... Demi: Pregnant. Doctor: Yes, you knew? Demi: No, I didn't. It's a long story. Doctor: Well, we are going to bring in some prenatal vitimens and your heart pills and you'll be all set. Just relax for the rest of the day and you can go home tomorrow morning. Demi: Thank you.
(Demi's POV) I turned my head to look at Joe, realizing he hadn't said a word since I said I was pregnant. Demi: Joe? *I touched his hand but he flinched and moved it away to massage the bridge of his nose. Something he always did when he was frustrated.*Joe, please. Talk to me. Joe: *He looked up and stared straight into my frightened eyes, I suppose he noticed and he replaced his nose for my hand, lacing it and rubbing my knuckles*You're pregnant. Demi: I'm pregnant. Joe: Wh...What are were going to do? Demi: We're going to be parents. *smiles* Joe: *He was focusing on my lips, like he couldn't believe what was coming out, after what felt like forever he finally looked me in the eyes.*I love you so much, you know that right? Demi: *nods* Joe: And I'm going to love our baby too, I do love our baby, so I want you to know right now that i'm not angry.
At first I doubted his words but then he pulled my blanket down and did the first thing that made me sure he was in it. He kissed me belly, his quiet tears falling onto my hospital gown and he sang our song from karaoke night softly until we fell asleep.
