It's straight up R&B folks. Blues + jazz + danceable rhythms that would later be called "funky" = rhythm & blues.

BB King, Albert King, T-Bone Walker, howling wolf all had horns in their songs. THE BLUES my man.
but Rufus leans a lot towards funk, thats for sure.
