Just using the Parelli technique for sideways, tapping stick on ground & pointing my finger at his head to keep him straight. Then keeping my step cadence up but not moving forward but allowing the rope to slide through my hand as he stepped away. Then I would step forward a bit to keep the connection to him. It was a progressive thing over a year till he was comfy at end of rope. He took well his responsibility of being straight but it was hard to stop him going forward. Across slopes helped.
