if sam is a shapeshifter why doesnt he shapeshift into something else other than a dog? like when he was rescuing sookie he could have changed into a bear or a tiger , not some dog.

He is most comfortable shifting into a dog. He has done it so many times that he doesn't always need one near to 'imprint' off of. There wasn't a bear, or a tiger around when Sookie needed saving. In Season 2 you will see he can change into other creatures. Sam is a true shapeshifter per the books so he can change into any living form with an imprint.

He changes into all sorts of things in season 2. But he says he has to imprint on them first. And That takes time.

Alan Ball is a wizard of storytelling. If you watch season 2 then go back and re-watch season 1 all the little things and huge he sets up in 1 just makes season 2 thrive. Twilight does not compare to true blood. not that it isn't a good book series,its just entirely different.
I've read all 4 books, I know. But i have also read all 9 books of the Sookie Stackhouse Series. All together this world is much more creative and inventive compared to twilight. Twilight is kinda just a nice idea.
