Every countertenor brings something special to the world. Jarousky is great with Vivaldi and Monteverdi. Scholl is great with Bach, Esswood with Handel, Ainsley with Handel and they all have certain songs they do best. So sad that people do not see that no performer is best in every song.

I do'nt like Scholl; Sazzo is much better! Not to mention Cencic, Esswood and Jarooussky. I think I can tell; I've heard a lot of countertenors in the 30 years I've listened to baroque music.

@idamclopes I hear no nasality. I here a bit brighter tone than he uses and more free-flowing vibrato. These are the first few years he started to lose the "boy alto" sound and really started developing into an operatic countertenor.

@raw51 I think it sounds much more like James Bowman's coloratura than that of Rene Jacobs. And Mr. Bowman's coloratura is used very musically, even though he has a tendency to rush a bit.

Interesting observation! I agree. But! I like his singing more now, I'm more interested in a man than an angel as they often call(ed) him.

He has expression now and he can act.

I was beginning to wonder if I`m the only one to perceive the true nature of the Emperor`s New Clothes or there`s a question mark to be put over my musical sanity. Now I just sigh with relief. I`ll never forget some music hack from the Grammophone reviewing panel issuing comments to the effect that " his reams of coloratura are perfectly even" and so on. Yes, he who hath ears let him hear first, not necessarily write.

Hmm I couldn't agree more. Continental Coloratura, presumably a trick he picked up when learning with that most supreme of machine-gun coloraturists, Rene Jacobs. Inexcusably unmusical if you ask me, but then again Vivica Genaux seems to make it work...
