Ultramatic an Twinultramatic were the only automatic transmissions that were developed by an independent automobile builder. A properly maintained T-U works as it was intended to do. The bugs are worked out for long. Packard, and later Studebaker, adressed service letters and concerning the troubles. There are hundreds of these cars with T-U around that work as they should.

Hello, I'm really interested in how the levelizer worked. Have you ever run across any articles, movies or websites that explained it or showed pictures of it?

@ARCANOE Hi, I sold the car about 10 months ago but during the time I owned it I never had any problems with the automatic transmission as far as I can remember. Thanks

@pvrocker56 EVERYONE had problems with Ultramatic, which BTW is a 2 speed, not 3. Biggest design screwup with they used a bronze bushing to seal the torque converter with no seal. As the bushing would wear, oil would bypass the cooler more and more and burn the fluid and trash the whole box. They were horridly inefficient as well, being basically a Buick Dynaflow with a torque converter clutch. Once locked up, they were good for economy, but around town, they were pigs of the highest order.

@DeserTBoB93535 I can agree that that transmission can't have been the engineers pride and joy but however mine worked just fine except that I though it was a bit rough when it shifted, according to the sources I have found, my car was equipped with the all new 3 speed push button automatic called twin ultramatic and on the push button controller there were 1, 2, D, N, R, P and I ran all the gears and I promise you that that gearbox was a 3 speed and original.
