In 2004, entrepreneur Peter Hendriks saw a solution for Amsterdam's goods transport problems during a visit to the Volkswagen factory in Dresden: the cargo tram. A goods transport system that made use of trams had many advantages, he realised: it would help to reduce heavy goods transport in the inner city, and also help to reduce traffic stoppages and air pollution. In addition, it would help to increase road safety. And so a plan was made in 2005 to use trams and small electric delivery vehicles to transport the majority of goods in Amsterdam. The goods trams will supply many of the city's shops, supermarkets and hospitality establishments.
