Major flat six custom build from a wreck! Bus had been left to rot at the back of a barn for 6 yrs. It was going to be converted to a burger bar :( Didn't relish that idea so I'm now in the middle of converting it into a VW / Porsche hybrid. Shouldn't get into too much of a pickle? It can't be that hard . . . can it??
My T'rusty steed is no longer FeO2, having replaced everything below knee height [to a girraff] and strengthened wherever neccesary. All sections made up in galv wherever possible + every weld fully treated. I've had the new engine in the back just to make sure it fits [it does - JUST, but had to re arrange a few ancillaries to allow it to slot in!] but took it out again to set up for the conversion and any little niggles.. ha ha man have there been some! Glad I did; now that it's sorted; it needs chucking into the back of the bay though I need 2 progress some more mods first. All drive train is matched 911 [the 915 gearbox cost me the same price that I paid for the bus!] and lines up really well. I've strengthened the chassis already whilst doing the renovation or should that read 'resurection'? Have also encorporated quick release features into this engine swap should it ever have to be removed in the future for repairs etc. Still a long way to go before Mubbsi hits the streets, but when she does circa 2008/2009, the sun is just gonna keep shining! Even if I had decided not to go for the custom conversion and just stuck with the standard re-build it would have been worth it; KEEP THE AIR COOLED's ALIVE DUDE'S .......you know it makes sense?!:)
To the VW purists out there turning uncomfortably in your beds I leave you with one thought . . "Would you rather have seen a burger-bar"?
If this vid drives you then check out the two follow up movies, part 2 and, er oh yes, part 3. Part 3's pretty scary, don't go there unless your prepared to get your fingers burned?
If this vid ain't your thing then your prob not reading this anyway?
Oct 2010, have just uploaded an updat vid 'VW Bus - nice bay but no beach', check it out if you want to see my busses progress? If not, no worries :)
Nov 2011; my how time passes?
The last video showing the completed build is now posted - check out ' VW custom bus finally hits the roads, 5 yrs on! This bus rocks!' video to see and hear the final result!
Hope you enjoy it :) Drop me a mail and let me know sometime.

  • What engine you got there? it might have told if so i missed it thanks. nice bus by the way. I'm rebuilding a 79 westy, it was my first vehicle i've owned it since 1996 and its been in storage since 2001, i've finnally rounded up enough time, parts, and money to get her back on the road hopefully next month

  • Yo @freedomfighter790, Man I've lost track the number of times I've said 'hopefully' :( They put the bleedin' pyramids up quicker than this build dude! Just got the last prob to sort on the engine fuel injection system then 'HOPEFULLY' [ha, ha.....?]I can slot it back into the bus for the umpteenth time and get her on the road. It's a flat 6 by the way since u were asking 790.

Last of the Bay Westie's eh,...... cool! Out of interest what horses do these churn out bro?

    Ta 4 line,

    Mubbsi :)

  • Nice vid , good concept . What happened to 2008 - 2009 lmao ? Am considering buying a camper myself , thats why i am checking out vids on VW restorations . Better to bring 1 back from the dead rather than buy a minter yeah ,not sure what engine configuration to go with tho good mpg an reliabilty or fast an furious as you have , Good luck :)

  • How the devil r u :)

    First off ta 4 sub!

Last few years have been really busy - all the detailing bits take like for ever man! I've put way more effort into this bus than I intended and missed the last few seasons because of it. It is finally coming together now though and next Spring is on [I think I've said this before somewhere??].

Re dead or mint; I'd always go with dead - when I bought this bus it just needed cremating!

You gotta make your own mind up; just remember - Don't be affraid!

  • @devilarchroll Hi D,

Just uploaded an update vid, October 2010 even...how up to date is that! Btw, re your mpg ref, this engine although twice the size will prob be same mpg...and non-leaded as well, perhaps even a bit better with luck?

Hope u enjoy the clips :)

  • great work, great video, great family, i like to see next the video soon : )

  • Hi London, great comments thx :)

Nearly there as they say - but couldn't get it all together for this summer:( Deff on cards for Spring next year now but should be able to post the final instalment of the roof rack in a months time. So you should see circa 90% of the bus together by then dude. Sorry for late reply but I'm living in the garage these days! Watch out for next vid and drop me a line when viewed.

    Cheerz,

    :)

  • until you own one, you never know how much they change your life!! we have a 76 bay, fully restored. we can go to ikea, go on holiday wherever and whenever, go out on the lash and not worry about getting a taxi, take stuff to the dump, fit the kids, shopping, dog and buggy in, go to fests, the list is endless, and they look so cool it's beyond coolness, it's aircooled lol!! we're off camping this week with the kids...again..and they love it, so many happy memories for them too!

  • @ discocreator76: i've been to your island some days ago. i didn't see english skandinavian or italian vans i proper condition there, but i saw lots of old german busses. open your eyes and think about that ;)

  • @mubbsi fj40 is a toyota land cruiser...mine is a 1978 model...I have fotos video here which shows it from being a rust bucket to a reasonable vehicle...I didn't use body parts, just bent metal...we painted it to look like a Finnish army vehicle to hide the imperfections - Rebuilding a Toyota Land Cruiser 78 FJ40 this is the name of the vid...I lost a lot of fotos when changing computers..mvh

  • Yeah thx granskare, I'm getting her back from the paint shop soon, just a pitty I'll prob miss this summer on the roads. What's an fj40 by the way, you've got me on that one dude!
