Loading and firing 1940 Tula SVT-40, 7.62x54R. The PU scope is dated 1941.

The SVT-40's scope mount is far enough to the rear due to the longer action that the rifle can still by loaded with five round stripper clips. In practice I've found it's a bit of a pain to get two clips into the magazine. Changing to a spare magazine is, of course, much faster. The magazine catch can be folded to the rear to lie against the receiver - this effectively fixes the magazine and renders the rifle a top-loader.

What brand of 7.62x54R are you using? Is it also non-corrosive and how good has it worked in your SVT? I just picked up a nice Finnish capture and plan on shooting it.

This was Prvi Partizan ammo. It's non-corrosive and works well in my SVT but I've found the Brown Bear and Silver Bear stuff groups a bit more consistently for me.

Yes, with single rounds or stripper clips. You can also remove the magazine to fill it separately. Standard issue for this rifle is listed as three magazines - one in the rifle and two in a belt pouch. I've only got one spare currently, originals are rather expensive and hard to find.

The top turret is adjustable in meters out to 1300. The side turret has windage adjustment is adjustable from -10 - 0 - 10 in mils. The reticle does not stay centered in the PU scope when the towers are adjusted.

Sorry for a potentially dumb question but have you found the sniper version of this rifle to be any better than the regular one? I'm looking to get an SVT-40 soon and I really like the look of the sniper version but should I go to the trouble of hunting down a scope and mount for it?
