The Prelude et fugue en sol mineur by Johannes Brahms on the 5-manual, 124 rank C.B. Fisk organ at the Lausanne Cathedral in Switzerland. This is the first American built organ in a European Cathedral.

  • Richards/Fowkes & Co. is currently building an organ in London at the church where Handel once was. The Hook & Hastings in Germany just celebrated its 10th anniversary this past October. Several who had attended the Schnitgers Droom festival in Groningen went on to be at this 10th anniversary event. The organ originally was built for a New England church that closed and was sold to the German church.

  • @originaltommy I believe a Hook & Hastings organ was recently sold to a German church. But as far as I know there are no other American organs in any (significant) European church or concert hall. And you won't find a Casavant organ in all of Europe...

  • I want that 32' Reed! It just blurts away so beautifully, complimenting rather than obliterating! Fabulous sounding instrument, would love to hear more of it!

  • @unkastacky You're indeed correct. I think where the original poster would argue that point is that they stated " This is the first American built organ in a European Cathedral. " They might have you on Cathedral. However, it's semantics. Let's talk about American, or Canadian organs in European churches or concert halls. That could be an interesting topic, and as a Canadian, I'd be interested to see where Casavant fits into it all! :-) Cheers!

  • I had the joy of a visit to the Fisk works at Gloucester on Cape Ann in 2001. This wonderful organ was being built at the time and was their first exported instrument. When you actually stand alongside a 32 foot flute I can tell you it is really something!

  • Well done! Who is playing?

  • Fabulous performance and instrument.

I think Lawrence Phelps put an American organ in Hexham Abbey in England in the mid '70s, so this isn't the first. But it's clearly a significant instrument just the same.

  • Beautiful sonorities from this formidable-sounding instrument. The console appears to be quite modern and spacious in design, with strikingly clean layout of the manuals, pedals and stops. Brahms is not often heard in venues such as this great cathedral.
