Read the full story at http://www.suffolktimes.com: In the mid-1980s and '90s, brown tide devastated Long Island, New York's population of Peconic Bay scallops. Now, after five years of cultivating scallops and the algae they eat in a Southold hatchery, a team of biologists from Cornell Coorperative Extension and Long Island University have boosted their numbers exponentially with funding from Suffolk County. As a result, baymen were able to harvest the delectable shellfish up until March 31 last year, the very last day of the season.
Here is a tour of the Southold hatchery, located on Cedar Beach. Next week, we'll take a ride with the boatmen who maintain more mature scallops in Orient Harbor, where they live protected from predators in underwater nets.
