Took the kids on a day trip to the Toronto Islands and saw this bird. I rarely see these red winged blackbirds, so it seemed like a good idea to tape it. :-)

  • I used to wake up to the sound of red winged blackbirds and meadowlarks singing every morning when I lived in the country as a kid. Ah I miss that now that I am living in town. Nice video.

  • @Damienf77 Thanks! Sad to think that 11 years later that wee guy is probably long dead and this video may be all that remains of him. Long may he sing.

  • I see them every day where I live. They attack people, including me. I cause no harm to them, but they are very paranoid and brave. The one I usually see spots me from across the street, lands on a light post and threatens me by making those sounds, and then attacks me when I face my back to it. I hate them so much, but I must admit they care a lot about their young. (Too much.)

  • Wow. I've never seen that, but I'm not very often where they live. I'll keep it in mind. Thanks!

  • Caroline...I know your thinking what I'm thinking.

    I love you.

  • Red winged blackbirds are quite common in the united states. The male here is atop the vegetation while either his mate, his nest, or his future nest site is below him. They make that sound only to say "Hey! Get off my property!" either to humans, other creatures, or other birds. They are my favorites.

  • I like them because they are one of the very first birds i can remember as a little boy and there was one who lived in a nest near our back door that was semi-tame. So I feel a sort of connection to them when I see one....and can get quite close moving slowly and quietly.

  • love these birds see them all the time around San Rafael,Ca
