@Planetar17 By 1860, Britain was a super empire and she could have made things difficult for Lincoln by joining the rebs in the South and also opening up a front from Canada, but she didn't. I don't think such a strategy would have worked, for the North was that powerful, but it would have extended the war and made it bloodier and brought other Europeans in to aid the North, perhaps igniting a world war.

Britain did preserve the United States during her early years. Just by recognizing her as the 'United States...' paved the way for other European nations to follow. She protected us from Spain and France ever regaining a stronghold in what would later become the western U.S. Britain could have forced a more favorable post 1815 boundary for their Canadian border, but didn't--they backed off their Pacific NW claims to Oregon. They didn't exploit the Civil War by aiding the South with troops.
