First Solo Ice-Fishing Trip:

I was excited to go out and venture onto an isolated pond for monster bluegills. I was even more excited to try my brand new Vexilar Flash Sonar FL-18.

The Rig:

I just wanted to pack light and stay mobile. The Jet-Sled by Shappell allows you to stay mobile and light: but at the same time, gives you the freedom to load a fair amount of equipment.

I was able to haul in bait, an auger, a pack-seat, buckets, and a wide range of fishing gear with the utmost ease.

The Auger:

I chose the 8-inch bit. You never know when a lunker pike or catfish is going to inhale your minnow on a tip-up. The larger hole just makes it easier to get the fish out quickly. Also, the 8-inch hole gives you more room when you are vertically jigging with your flasher. I was able to cut through 15 inches of ice in just a few seconds. I really like my Lazer Auger by StrikeMaster.

The Flasher:

My Vexilar FL-18 fish finder is the bomb. I bought this model since it can be used on open-water as well. I cant wait to rig this on my Portabote and Malibu Mini X Kayak. Real-time fish finders are far superior in my opinion. I can literally watch my bait underneath the transducer. There is no guessing. It is very easy to differentiate between weeds, your lure, fish, and bottom. It is just the difference between night and day.

The Results:

I didnt find the monster bluegills, but I did manage to catch a bass, warmouth, and a few small bluegills. I had a lot of fun. I cant wait until I pull a northern pike out from the ice.....all in due time.

  • its a bad idea to fish or hunt alone cause u get hurt or injured hows gonna report

  • You hold those tiny fish right up to the camera & they still look small

  • Wow you caught a few tiny fish. Amazing

  • nice video. 5 stars.

  • This dude needs to learn how to properly hold a fish by it's lip and gills. He just broke every fish's jaws in that video.

  • You pulled a whole survivorman here, bringing your cameras and everything!
