AD3 Flt. Mech./Radar oprt. U.S.C.G. 77&78. Absolutely loved the smell of avgas and oil burning at first "puff" when mags were turn on ! Flew outta Airstation Traverse City on Pollution patrols and wildlife counts as well as overdue searches. Loved every minute. Chief Bloom was a great guy to train under. Her oil drips could be a bitch to clean up tho on a winter moanin,!!

I've seen the other albatross that has flown around the world just earlier today.

Man I used to love the smell of those P&Ws firing up ! Flew FltMech.-Radar oprt. on em in the USCG 76/77 before switchin to helo. Did many engine run ups after doin, work on them puppies. Most embarrassing award? The dreaded TailPin award of "whats that dinging sound"? Who forgot to pull the taildroop rod.Kept the tail from hitting the ground from wind gusts.Ya got a minature copy from the metal shop at formation next day if ya forgot to pull it during preflight walkaround.Usualy OOOPS.
I flew as in flight plane captain & mech on the HU16C ( UF-1 in navy before designation change) out of Naval Air Facility, Naha AFB, Okinawa from July 63-Dec 65. I have over a 1000 hours in the UF, most in BUNO # 137916. Flew all over the Far East and only ever had 1 major malfunction. We lost an engine while taking off from some AFB in Japan. Aborted the take off, NAS Iwakuni brought us a new engine, the radioman and myself changed the engine in a couple of days and we were on our way. Norm R.

@sunstate39 This airplane too lost an engine on takeoff from Carlsbad, California about 7 or 8 years ago. The pilot that use to fly it all the time is a good friend and has lots of good stories about this old bird. Thanks

Well, My Dad was a flight engineer on the SA/HU16s for years. He's 73 now and you know, he still misses the Old Bird. I told him if I was to hit the Lottery, I'd buy him one just to park and sit in. Long live the Albatross. Don't let them ever Clip their wings.41s ARS Hamilton Field

I bet your Dad has some wonderful memories of the Albatross. They are incredible machines. They seem to have thier own 'soul'. This one definatly has a personality.
