Nationally renowned realist painter David Shevlino talks with John Thornton about his art and life. How does a professional artist weather the current slump in the artworld?
PAFA was a different place in 1980 when I first went there. It didn't cost so much then and the idea of it "selling" itself as some sort of "social access point" is laughable. It didn't even offer a degree! I certainly never went there with ANY idea that my social rank would somehow be changed....at 18 I was too naive to know what any of that meant. I just wanted to study art. I suppose even then that was quite a rarity.
"I came from a working class background and I don't know how I became an artist." Simple, places like the academy sell it as an upper middle class access point if you hate yourself and/or your family, to the tune of 20K a year. And ironically the "artist" winds up supported by someone else and in debt. Nice work tho.
What's not to like? His work is really nice. And some day, I predict, he will be right up there with the greats. From Ed F, no relation to the artist.
hands down you are my favorite painter. inspirational.
