Fanø-Valsen" (The Waltz Of The Island Of Fanø), a tribute to the Danish Island of Fanø, the island is located in South-Western part of Denmark in the North Sea a few kilometers West of the Danish harbour town Esbjerg. The Island Of Fanø was already before WW1 a very popular holiday resort for Danish and tourists from other countries. In this video you will see several old photoes from Fanø, and especially the old summer hotels at Fanø. Most of these old jugend style hotels don't exist anymore, and some of them are peplaced by ugly modern hotel facilities. The charm of the old area of the old summer hotels has today totally dissapeared. The most famous summer hotel at the Island of Fanø was "Hotel Kongen af Danmark" (Hotel The King Of Denmark), where several popular Danish dance orchestras before 1950's entertained the summer tourists every night. In summer 1937 the Danish jazz violinist Svend Asmussen played at "Hotel Kongen af Danmark". Between 1941-45 most of the summer hotels at the Island of Fanø were closed for tourists and instead used by the German Army. Also the Island of Fanø was between 1941-45 a part of the Atlantic Wall, the German socalled coast defence from Northern Norway and down to France in the occupied countries. After the Liberation the Danish summer turists returned to the Island of Fanø, and the old summer hotels continued until modern times made them more or less outdated, and many Danes instead began to travel to the Mediterranean in their summer holidays after mid 1960's. Today many especially German tourists visits the modern summer hotels at the Island of Fanø every summer. Also many one day tourists from nearby Esbjerg goes to the North Sea beaches at the Island of Fanø every summer.

"Fanø-Valsen" was one of the most popular Danish 78rpm records during 1940's, and many of the copies you easily can find at the Danish flea markets are often very worn, after being played over and over again on the old victrolas. The periodic scarcity of the steel victrola needles in Denmark between 1940-47, often caused that many WW2 78rpm records in Denmark were played too many times with the same neddle, which of course meant that many of the sound rill were extra worn.
Also the shellack quality on the Danish WW2 78rpm records was very bad, especially between 1942-48. Between 1940-49 the Danish people were duty to deliver an old 78rpm record when buying a new one. The old 78rpm record went for recyckling for procuction of new 78rpm records, which ofcourse not gave a first class quality.

Holck og Peters Harmonikaorkester was a very popular Danish accordion orchestra during 1940's.

Helge Leonhard (1911-1996) was one of the most popular Danish vocalists during 1940's. Helge Leonhard recorded countless of Danish 78rpm records. 1951 Helge Leonhard gave up his career and emmigrated to Canada.

Fanø-Valsen

Text og Musik: Tom Andy

Møder du en Veninde i Esbjerg en Da',
taler I om lidt Hygge, som To holder a',
enes I om at bade ved Stranden her
opfriske gamle Minder, som l fik kær.
Klitternes Toppe venter Jer, her bliver Liv,
nu har vi Idealet paa alt Tidsfordriv.
Naar Sommerdage ganger paa Hæld,
nynner vi to en Vals for os selv.
Fanø med Sand - Fanø med Vand - Fanø med Sol og Sommer.
I Liv og Lyst
finder vi Trøst
bortset fra sandfyldte Lommer.
Her vil vi mødes paa Stranden min Skat,
danse paa »Kongen« til det bliver Nat.
Fanø med Sand - Fanø med Vand - Fanø med Sol og Sommer.
