Like Sporkazoid said, classes are based on timeline and status. In order it goes:

Fledgling, Neonate, Ancillae, Elder, Methuselah, and Antediluvian.

Methuselah are the eldest after Antediluvian.

Antediluvian means "after the flood" which refers to the deluge God dropped on Noah's head lol. They're called Antediluvian because they are the surviving lineage directly after the flood. There is another class or "race" called Voivode which is what Vukodlak was in VTM-R.

First off, sorry for replying at a pretty old comment, just wanted to say this.

The reason he refers to you as "neonate" is not primarily a reference to the matrix, it could be, but primarily "neonate" is within the Vampire the Masquerade universe one of several terms to describe a vampire based on age and social status, others include "Fledgling", "Ancilla", "Elder" and others strictly status-y titles such as "Prince".

Max also possesses the strictly Tremere-title of "Regent".
