Hampton Arts Management, in Collaboration with The University of Tampa, presents Charles Busch's Die! Mommie! Die!, a play that references the campy thrillers of the 1960s. The comic melodrama features faded pop singer Angela Arden, who is trapped in a bad marriage and attempts to find happiness in the arms of a younger man. She murders her husband, but her daughter quickly suspects her and plots Electra-like revenge with her brother. In fact, the play alludes to the Greek tragedy Agamemnon, where the hero is killed by his wife, Clytemnestra, and her daughter Electra avenges him.
"Clytemnestra! Now that was a gal with a lot of style and gumption," Busch wrote in the forward to the screenplay. "I thought the story of an adulterous queen who murders her powerful husband and whose son and daughter are obsessed with her guilt would be the makings of a hilarious screen comedy."
