@linkvashflcl He also knew how his dad would cut his words down, make them small and meaningless just as he assumed his acting passion to be. It's like telling a bully your darkest fears.

This scene is why Neil understood Todd and got along with him so well. They were the same. I loved Neil's spirit when he tried to rouse Todd from silence. Beautiful movie.

What a small-minded fool! Such a man doesn't deserve to have the honor of having a child. To deny the artistic joys which ensnare the senses and enrich the soul is truly a crime.
