Camera: Canon 40D
Lens: Canon 50mm f/1.8 ii

Studio lighting needn't be difficult and lighting a black or dark coloured background is a great place to start. In this video I'll show you a few of my favourite Head & shoulder lighting set ups that use just one light.

  • LOvely tutorial as always !!!!!!!! Gavin would you please tell me the settings for white balance on camera for conitnuous lighting? I get really greenish / cyan cast on pics specially for white backgrounds . Please help me :o)

  • @icelilly123 I sed Auto WHite Balance and adjust the coulour cast in Adobe Camera RAW. A reference shot of my grey card is always taken at the start of the shoot.

  • What lens are you using in this video?

  • @DramaQueen1958 Actually it was a 50mm f1.8... Makes a change from my 24-105L I guess

  • Great tips there Gav I am guessing this will work for video to?

  • @SillyFokkerRC Yes the same techniques will work in video.

  • Hey Gavin! This has been the first video about lighting that has actually been of any use to me! I am a complete N00b when it comes to studio photography. I dont have the patience to read books so youtube is my main source of info. If you could do more "studio" based videos that would be amazing. Possibly an "idiots guide" to setting a basic studio + lighting up.

  • @alextfotografias galvin?

  • I tried this using my Interfit ex150 studio lights with the modeling light at 100%, but it was very dark and had to use 40th f/4 to get a usable image. I'm guessing it is because they are low power?

  • can i ask you Gavin, what is your best lens or the one you prefer for portraits ? im just a beginer myself, love your videos

  • Beautiful shots!
