I actually liked this cameo, it was good to have some comedy relief. made me laugh when the earthquake hit and he didn't notice it while people were panicking and most likely dying around him.

According to everything I have read, he didn't want to do anything in this film that was a large part. He was friends with the producer who kinda badgered him into doing something. When the took the drunk park and saw the final scenes, Matthau was upset that his character was so prominent, so he is credited in the film as Walter Matuschanskayasky. People then started saying this was his given name, but apparently, it wasn't. It was Matthow and he changed the spelling.

This wasn't a cameo role. He has several scenes. The punch line was that when the earthquake hit he was the only one that could walk straight. Not saying it was a great role, just that this was only a small portion of the entire role. And not a cameo unless you saw a severely edited version of the movie.
