Ever take a handsfree Bluetooth phone call while listening to your iPod? Sure you do. Oftentimes cars with fully integrated factory hookups for both are set up to automatically pause the iPod as soon as a call comes in or is dialed out. Our Ford Flex works that way, as well as several others. It's very seamless and convenient.

But that's not the case with our Nissan long-term vehicles: the 2009 Nissan GT-R, 2009 Infiniti FX50 and this 2009 Nissan 370Z. In these the iPod keeps playing in the background, albiet fully muted, while you take your call. The phone screen can't be replaced by the audio screen while a call is ongoing, and that makes the pause control, a touchscreen "button" on the audio screen, inaccessable during a call. This is especially irksome when listening to a podcast or audiobook -- programs that listeners must keep up with.

What really needs to happen is this: The iPod system needs to simply recognize activity on the phone side and automatically go into pause mode, but it does not. As a result the driver must wait until the call is over and then rewind to where he thinks the call started. This call lasted about a minute, but I know people who talk a lot longer than that. It's an annoying distraction no matter how long the call lasts.

This is the one noticeable flaw in an otherwise excellent job of iPod and Bluetooth integration by Nissan.

  • Well that's a bit annoying...

I'm considering buying one of these, and I have no doubt this will irritate me. I wonder if the dealer can do anything about it?

  • Probably not, but here are two things to consider: the 2010 370Z may have different software and every phone interacts differently (this was a Blackberry Pearl Flip). Try your phone and iPod at a dealer to see. Since this video was shot, I've switched to an iPhone, a device with the phone and iPod married together. One knows what the other is doing, so it handles the iPod pause automatically when a call comes in, even if the car isn't smart enough to do it.
