IICD Michigan supported a fundraising initiative put on by 'Georgia Street Community Collective' at their community garden and community center in Detroit, Michigan.
Also present at the activity was 'PRI-DE' short for ' Permaculture and Resilience Initiative -- Detroit'
The February Africa team was in charge of assuring that IICD's contribution was of high quality, fun, tasty, and with great energy and diversity, representing who we are.
Georgia Street Community Collective, or rather GSCC, has been a good friend of ours this year, especially its founder Mark Covington , who started up this small non-profit organization after returning to the neighborhood where he grew up in a few years ago.
Mark is concerned with the growing situation of poverty in his community, the lack of resources, the hopelessness, availability of healthy food, and the overall sense of community
We of IICD are also concerned as well as many other grassroots' organizations popping up in Detroit, the inspiring people who start them up, and those who work with them.
The day was a huge success with good people, good food, fun, games, and music, all coming from the different cultures present.
GSCC hosted this street fair and fundraiser to showcase their efforts to improve the neighborhood which include;
- Community gardens and a fruit orchard where anyone can help themselves to the fresh vegetables and fruits grown there.
- A community center and shelter that we are planning to help fix up this summer
- And a community gathering place and outdoor movie theater
The day had started off with some rain - but that did not stop the activities and good fun of many people coming together, and enjoying each other's company.
A magic show, great music by several artists, food, art, and more, were all part of the activities enjoyed by all present, and we look forward to being a continuing part of the development that GSCC is pushing forward for the benefit of many.
