i was walking down an alleyway in london with some friends on a hot summer evening ...
it stank so bad...and i said to my mates..."smell the urine-isn't it divine?!" ...they giggled...and that's how i got the title for this song.
in places like london or new york there's a constant fear that corporate forces will suck the blood out of city life...
there's a fear that there will be nothing left but neat faceless buildings and the artistic community will vanish...
i've worried about it too,but i realise it will never happen, cause cities by their very nature are where people come to further themselves...and find themselves ...and loose themselves...
and you can never homogenize people....because people like to drink and laugh and love and fuck...people are smelly and messy... the smelly chaos people cause might be a drag sometimes, but it's comforting too...it reminds us of our humanity....so i'm not gonna worry too much about corporate culture ruining our cities...i know that people smell stronger than buildings or money.
from the soho gutter to buckingham palace, people are pissing and shitting themselves in more ways than one....life is life is a beautiful scary thing.
with the music,i've tried to conjure up the feel of the soundtracks to the movies i love..'the good the bad and the ugly'...composers like john barry who did 'diamonds are forever'...david lynch films...ennio morricone soundtracks.....and the video itself pays a vague tribute to joe orton..he wrote plays, and was murdered by his jealous controlling lover...joe was asked to write the script for the beatles'help' movie but was thrown off the project cause he made it too sexy.... a real shame..it would have been amazing...and joe went to jail for defacing a fucking library book....this was the making of him..before jail his work was average, but the absurdity of being banged up for defacing a library book unlocked the humour in him,and from then on he became big star of the london theatre world...he was good sweet luvable man,but he had a fondness for hanging out in mens toilets....hahahahahahahahaha
it was tricky making the video...the police and public weren't too happy with me hanging out around the public toilet with a camera..but the homeless man was like a gift from the gods...i felt so grateful and lucky when he sailed into view....he is the star of this little clip, and i gave him every pound in my pocket for opening up like he did.in so many ways there's not a lot of difference between a homeless man and some royal prince...we're all flying by the seat of our pants!
my love to you as always....mary of the wilderness.
Absolutely wonderful video and song. Is that next to Poland St, I used to work there? Near Berwick Street Market. Many a strange thing I used to see around Soho over the years working there during the 70s / 80's and mid 90's pity I never bumped into you hahaha :D
