@s6u6r6f6 And rich men were also overrepresented in the Union armies, as well as white citizens, despite the draft which was always avoided through commutation and checked by the Democrats. The South imposed their own very unpopular drafts and exempted the planting class (5 percent) for most of it, who had a lot of political power in the Confederate Congress. The difference is many Southern draftees believed they were fighting Yankee hordes coming to wed black freedmen to their daughters,
class envy, class warfare , division, seperation has always been the favorite tool of a New England Yankee. It still is. I would suppose you know nothing of the NYCity riots because of the Union 'draft' ? nor the immagrant ships conscripting Irish right off the boats of Boston and New York.? ......."coaxed" indeed ! 90 percent of southern men served. We were burned out and STILL we have our heritage intact. Thats right : HERITAGE. Deo Vindice
@s6u6r6f6 With all due respect to your ancestor who deserves as much honor as anyone who's fought for what he believes and paid the ultimate price. God bless him.
@s6u6r6f6 "heritage" is quite a euphamism. the historical record is unwavering in why the south seceded and started the war, and how it coaxed its lower classes into fighting the so-called cause.
Capt Carey F Grimes, Portsmouth Light Artillery CSA. Defender of Gosport veteran of the seven days campaign and Malvern Hill..unlimbered his battalion of three companies, four guns each above Pipers Farm on the Hagerstown Turnpike posted to drive the enemy back. While directing his batteries fire he was shot from his horse; to die on the field of honor 17 Sep 1862 Sharpsburg, MD.
Grimes is my ancestor in this War of Nothern Aggression ; a heritage never forgotten..
The Emancipation Proclamation was so important , that it did nothing . It didn't even free the slaves that were just outside the White House . The proclamation has to be the most overrated and over praised piece of political garbage ever made . If your going to honor and praise a law that actually freed the slaves it's called the 13th Amendment .
@vaibanez17 smaller groups of men are easier to outmaneuver, a quick change in front to the enemy position would easily counter such a move and sending smaller groups to behind enemy lines would be undoubtable making those men prisoners. Actually more wasted bullets, more dead men that way.
you just can't profess to know anything about politics if you don't believe class to be a major factor. it's naive
