Luciano Pavarotti sings Nessun Dorma from act III of Puccini's Turandot. This was an encore to a very taxing recital in Salzburg. Not only was the recital program extremely demanding, but he had already sung his usual encore, Una furtiva lagrima. He sounds so gorgeous and lyrical here.

  • My only wish is that it could have been with a full orchestra. But brilliant! I never get tired of hearing new versions. And by "new" I mean new to me. Thanks again Mooorhe.

  • Interestingly, since I've started contacting close friends of Pavarotti's, I've come across dozens of the recitals (many fully orchestrated) that he did in the early '70s. He sang Nessun Dorma as an encore quite frequently, so there are many versions of his from before 1976 in existence.

  • A very fine rendition indeed, but I've got to be honest with you, I'm kind of sick of this aria :P

    Great recording though! :)

  • Lol, I know what you mean.

  • Pavarotti was one of the greatest exponents of the bel canto tradition, and I fear with his passing, one of its last

  • This is probably my favorite version of this song - just the Pav and a piano. It seems more intimate, and you hear the piece for what it really is: An undeniably gorgeous tune, something Puccini did over and over but unfortunately is often lost in orchestra vs. voice scheme. Pav of course is at his best here.

  • This shows the quality of the voice. There a very few tenors who are able to command and control their voice only accompanied by piano. Most of the time their voices are sadly hidden by the noise and theatre of the orchestra

  • The greatest aria ever!

  • BRAVO! Exceptional and Priceless! The PAV dominated!

  • @Mooorhe The voice here is fresh, ready to tackle whatever you give it. What a pity he did not at least record some roles he could have left his mark on such as Don Jose, Maurizio in Adriana Lecouvreur, Don Alvaro he cancelled in the ninetees at the Met and Werther he was supposed to sing with Pittsburgh and Maazel..

Who knows, maybe something survives in recordings and waiting to be released by DECCA or others...

  • OMG!!! I LOVE this! One can hear much more the color of Pava's voice and his stunning technique since he is not having to "push" to be heard over an full orchestra --I'm floored!

Thanks so much for posting this--what a refreshing recital!

  • BRAVO..BRAVO!!

  • @Mooorhe I wish I could get in contact with people who knew My bigger example of a tenor! I'm learning to sing opera. I only hope to be a 10% of him and that's all for me!

  • very diferent between the piano and the orchest, i obviously prefer orchesta, but also in piano is incredible, well in piano sounds a little romantic isnt?, more silently!

  • @Mooorhe Could you post some of them please?

  • @hansquad It's not called "The Mount Everest for Tenors" for nothing lol.
