Since October 14, 1947, U.S.A.F. Major Charles "Chuck" Yeager flew into aviation history by piloting a Bell XS - 1 reseach plane to supersonic speeds. These days NASA is flying unmanned aircrafts at close to Mach 10 velocity.

  • I firmly believe that the "messerschmidt Schwalbe was the first airplane to break the "sound barrier". When I was an Armor Officer in our training center in Fort Knox, I was ordered to escort a German Luftwaffe General to a function on that post, though his language skills were as good, or perhaps even better than mine. He had personally flown the "Schwalbe" in its record-breaking journey, and the bullshit we had to witness in the propaganda film: The Right Stuff, was just that!!!
