Creative Assembly today released the first behind the scenes look at what went into the jaw-dropping first look at Total War™: ROME II; "The Unmaking of Carthage" dev diary reveals some of the thinking behind the spectacular new tactical map and combined naval and land battle features.

The year is 146BC, brilliant tactician Scipio Aemilianus is dispatched by Rome to break the three-year-long siege of Carthage, an unforgivable blight on the glory of the growing Empire. Ruthless determination and an almost suicidal amphibious assault is required, but the young consul is uncomfortably aware that the price of victory may be much higher than the senate realizes.

Have people just forgotten that Fall of the Samurai had 40 unit custom battles?

I hate to be a pedantic bore, but hey this is history... Carthage was finally besieged and captured in 146 BC, long after Carthage had directly threatened Italy in the Second Punic War (around 210 - 200s BC). The idea that this was on the "cusp of losing the war" is wrong. It was the coup de grace of a severely weakened Carthage, not at the height of its danger as it had been fifty years before

true but thats the point of total war games, they dont follow history! if they did it would be really boring and very predictable

that is true but the scale of the battle was too much for many people to cope with so I assume they said 40 units was the limit and the tactical map makes it manageable to control that many units

I disagree to a point. Sure, none of the recent releases have lived up to Rome, but that's because it's such a high standard to live up to. If you take them for what they are and what they offer individually, they're all pretty good titles (with the possible exception of Vanilla ETW). :D
