How much magnesium shavings does it take to light dry tinder? What if it's wet? The dry frayed blue jean material in the vid will ignite to flame as is with any number of other fire starters, misch metal and ferro rod included. Considering many have claimed mag shavings will ignite damp tinder it should be a no brainer, eh?

Mag bars are neat but you gotta prep the other tinder/kindling over top to see how good they are...try light my fire cubes

Thanks, that's why I don't like the mag bars, if I need to prep tinder for them, I'll just prep the tinder and leave out the middleman, the magnesium shavings.

yeah, it seems mag shavings burn up too fast to be useful in a real world environment.

i use a mag fire stick made by United Cutlery. I was able to light ceder tinder fibers with it and i can ignite things like cotton balls with one strike with it. It works pretty good and i think it was only $6 or something. good video man.

Thanks, yeah, the fires steels themselves seem to work good enough without going through the effort of shaving magnesium.

To be honest about it, potassium permanganate and glycerine work better, IMHO. Also Vaseline and cotton balls. The only real need for mag bars, chemicals etc is WET tinder/kindling etc. I just grab a Bernz-o-Matic pint size can rig! If THAT wont lite it...hell I give up!

...there are risks that come with using reverse osmosis and softened water as well, like the strange slimy bacteria that builds up in the storage tanks. Reportedly, treated water is acidic, bad for our bones, because the water leaches calcium from our bodies and wears the enamel off our teeth.

As we get older it becomes more difficult to maintain good bone health and statistically, people with teeth problems die sooner than those with good teeth, so apparently it's a no win situation. lol
