[KEYWORDS OF ZEN ]
To meditate is to master the mind.
In order to master the mind,
we have to steady our breathing.
To steady our breathing,
we have to steady our bodies
along with a good sense of Karma.
The first step is to
perform numerous good deeds,
lead a gentle and moral life.
Follow the awe-inspiring path of Buddha.
Sit in a full-lotus posture,
in the correct Buddha posture.
Keep the entire body soft.
and motionless.
When wandering thoughts surface,
chase the present away,
then our collective good deeds (punya)
will help us turn back.
Then we go back to steadying our body,
check every part of our limbs,
look to see if our body is tense,
or if we are fidgeting anywhere.
Then realize the impermanence of our body.
Eventually, we will pass away,
turn into ashes or dust.
Our bones will become powder.
Be patient when keeping the body steady.
There's no need to be in a hurry.
If we practice the body thoroughly,
we are getting closer to the Path.
Then look into our body,
inhaling and exhaling
to keep us alive,
every second along with our breath.
There are two extremes
that will make our breath unsteady.
One is that we forget our breath
Two is that we over-exert our breath.
Forget the breath is to forget the Path.
The mind will fall into darkness.
Therefore, you have to attend to
every single marvellous breath.
Inhale, be aware you are inhaling,
Exhale, be aware you are exhaling.
Do not try to control it.
Do not push it with your will.
Sometimes, our breath might be long.
Sometimes, our breath might be short.
We just have to be clearly aware.
That is enough.
The breath is of the body.
We know the whole body.
We know the whole breath.
No need to wonder.
Keep one thing clear in mind.
No matter how the breath move,
do not try to control it
Just realize how it comes and goes.
Know the inhaling precisely.
Know the exhaling precisely.
Know precisely the whole lower body.
Be mindful and peaceful.
Keep the body steady,
motionless and mild,
more aware of each breath,
our mind will stop wandering.
There will be many states of mind,
marvelous and fantastic,
taking turns to appear,
making us misunderstand ourselves.
When we feel our mind is empty,
the soul will be most peaceful.
We will think we have achieved
a saint-like enlightenment.
But truly, we are still
standing outside of the Path.
Not yet through the gate
of the sacred temple.
In that sacred temple,
there is a marvellous seat
named "no-self"
which has been awaiting for us for so long.
