@lyclycsms it's 29" because the original idea was putting road rims to a mountain bike and they are 29" just because of the extra area that the mtb tires give to the wheel, but the rim's got the same measures than a road rim.

@SuperFunder Thanks!super helpful comment. i jsut got into mountainbiking. got a 2010 rockhopper comp and with my progression i could see myself in a better bike maybe even next year. checking out the options

@myridingmower they don't need as much travel (they usually have 80mm as opposed to 100mm on xc bikes) since the large wheels have a larger profile, lower angle of attack. this causes the wheel to roll smoother, not needing the full suspension. as for all-mountain/freeride, 29er's aren't popular in that category yet, but some exist, and they have about 140-150mm forks
i am the type of person who really appreciate technology, but i got a noob question... why 29 but not 30 inch? or why not 28 inch? which bicycle company started with this new standard for 29 inch? i don't mean to offend anyone i just want to learn. thanks!

@lyclycsms Google "Sheldon Brown Tyre Sizing" and you'll find an article on his website that provides all the info you could ever hope for on tire/wheel sizing.
