Riding a bicycle is a great way for children to have fun and exercise. However, every year in the United States, thousands of children are treated in emergency departments for bicycle-related injuries.
Many of these injuries can be prevented by following basic bicycling safety rules, such as:
•Always wear a helmet every time youre on a bike.
•Remember, even children in bicycle carriers should wear helmets. A child younger than one should never be a passenger on a bicycle, even in a bike carrier or trailer.
•Only ride during the daytime; it is not as safe to ride at dusk or after its dark outside.
•Most young children are not able to make safe choices in traffic situations. Children younger than 10 years should not ride in the street. They should use bike paths or sidewalks instead.
•When riding in the street, ride with traffic. Stay to the right. Do not swerve into traffic.
•Follow all traffic signs and signals. Stop at every intersection with a stop sign or red light.
•Walk the bike across busy intersections. Before you enter the intersection, look left, right and left again.
•Know your childs limits and set strict rules of when and where he can ride.
