Ridgebacks hold on for a win over Western

Women's Hockey: UOIT defeated Western 4-3

OSHAWA, Ont. - The UOIT women's hockey team held off a late charge by the Western Mustangs on Friday night as the Ridgebacks skated away with a 4-3 victory at the Campus Ice Centre.

The Ridgebacks dominated play in the opening two periods as they led 3-0 heading into the final stanza. After UOIT fought off a two-man advantage to begin the third which featured a Meghan Steacy (Gananoque, Ont.) shorthanded marker to make it 4-0 in favour of the Ridgebacks, it looked as if the game was over.

Western however had other thoughts, as the Mustangs stormed back with three unanswered goals in five minutes, to cut the Ridgebacks lead to just one with over six minutes remaining in the game.

Down the stretch, Western would have a couple of scoring opportunities to complete the comeback, but UOIT goaltender Jessica Larabie (Whitby, Ont.) shut the door to give the Ridgebacks their fourth win of the year.

The Ridgebacks special teams were excellent on Friday night, as UOIT held Western scoreless on the power play, while scoring two shorthanded goals. The Ridgebacks also went 1-for-4 with the man advantage.

Katie Gordanier (Gananoque, Ont.), Sarah Worthington ( Whitby, Ont.) and Vanessa Johnstone (Niagara Falls, Ont.) were the other Ridgebacks goal scorers on the night.

Assistant captain Jill Morillo (Whitby, Ont.) had her goal scoring streak snapped after four games, which is the longest in the OUA this season.

Larabie made 30 saves in her third win of the year while Western veteran goalie Jessica Ulrich had 23 stops in the losing effort.

Marking their return to the Durham region, Ellie Seedhouse (Whitby, Ont.) and Katie Dillon (Oshawa, Ont.) each had one point apiece.

UOIT (4-9-2) is now three points ahead of Western (3-11-1) and Waterloo (3-12-1) in the overall standings. The team will take on the Windsor Lancers (8-7-0) to close out the 2010 portion of their season. Game time at the Campus Ice Centre is 7:30 p.m.
