the grandfather of the dummer is just a guy, well know as a ROY HAYNES...can u imagene that?!

I'll try to do that.
Please note I loved the Sonic Trance album and his playing on it and wanted him to stay in that direction. It seems like trumpeters will do a couple of of electric miles albums and then go back to straight ahead. I wish they'd commit and at least integrate the styles instead of doing a wynton right after a brew-why not mix the two

@brambau Man Check out the album! Into the Blue.... It's killen! This tune is on it, Listen to it then criticize. It's a bit different because on the album they have a rhodes, and here they don't have that sound. Check it out then I think you'll come back with a better Idea of what's happenin.

Please post more of this... message me if you have the complete video. I can trade for a truly unique Dafnis Prieto gem.

Interesting discussion ... and no need to make it personal. The beginning does sound a bit aimless ... but could be the melody and could be part of the idea to build the groove. he must have had a reason to play that style (and I agree with other posters that early in the clip it sounds like not a lot of conviction).
From 3:39 the groove 'kicks' and the volume lifts ... he responds with some interesting sequences but at no point does he 'go for it' ... so for me ... that's the feel ...

you're talking about him generally
I'm not saying Wesley or R Brecker is better
But I'm talking about this specific clip
It's weak musically in my opinion.
Yes he plays well on Sonic Trance.
But I'm not one of those people so in awe of a "genius" not to see their imperfections. In fact it's very informative to see them when they are less than perfect. People who play funky all the time may play it better
On the other hand risk takers reach greater heights
also greater fails

Are you seriously comparing Nicholas Payton to Fred Wesley??? This is not a funk venture, this is a venture of creative music. Fred Wesley's goal was to get people up, excited and dancing and that is an admirable goal. Now, knowing and speaking with Nick on several occasions, I know him to be the type of musician that tries to make a meaningful statement to his audience not beat them over the head with the same tired rhythms and licks. He is developing ideas. He is painting a picture.
damn that drummer's groove is KILLIN
