My musical tastes run to Miles Davis, John Coltrane and Bill Evans. I will, therefore, defer to the knowledge of those more versed in opera than I except to say that if this lady is having difficulty, I can't hear it. This is truly marvelous to my ear.
Kiri has a lush full open focused beautiful tone But we knew that . Some roles are better suited to every singer so if you take that out of equation you are left with the voice and how every tone from top to bottom has the same quality of sound Very few sopranos have or had this . When she's good she's fabulous When she sings a piece that fits that big voice, it is truly inspiring
I love Dame Kiri te Kanawa but this is not the role for her. I saw her sing this at the Met in the 80s and, visually she was absolutely stunning and believable. Vocally, it was apparent she had trouble with this role. There were dynamic moments, notes, phrases - after all she is one of the greatest singers ever - but this is not her role. Countess, Marschallin, lots of others, but not this one. I love you DKTK!
Bravissimo, this is equal or BETTER than Callas and no wonder: Kiri started her career by winning a New Zealand prize in 1965 aged 20/21 with this aria.
