@lrhmiller I've never actually done personal protection training with my dog, but from researching it, it seems they train the dog to attack the hand with the weapon so as to disable it.
@DOMINATEMUSLIM My friend trains personal protection dogs and they don’t care for bigger dogs, smaller dogs, if the dog is male or female, other dominant dogs, submissive dogs. She can even train them not to give a crap about food, other people, animals big or small. You can train a dog to do almost anything. She said its harder and takes more time training an older dog out of obsessive behavior or bad habits but not impossible. Her dog is AMAZING but he is 14 years old now...
@DOMINATEMUSLIM funny you mentioned that, i am curious.. do you find female dogs more protective? Reason i ask is i now have a female German shepherd... always had males before, and am really impressed with her protectiveness! Don't get me wrong, my males were protective too, but my female is VERY territorial of my yard, and very protective; my brother jokingly grabbed me 1 day and she knocked him out of the way, then stood between us, and she wont let other dogs near me either.
I think these dogs are beautiful and definitely provide excellent protection, but I would be afraid an intruder would have a gun or knife and hurt/kill them. Have you ever run into that kind of situation? Thanks.
@AlfredDaSauce They should, but try and get the opposite sex as 2 males or 2 females might have issues. German shepherds are territorial and can be dog aggressive, however, with the right training/introduction, they will be fine. My German shepherd became friends with a Pitbull in the vets office and they were well behaved while a Lab had to be removed for being too wild. That just shows love and good training does wonderful things for dogs :)
that must be real annoying to the neighbors.
