We Are Organelles

Cell you have everything, all the organelles
You're not really that big, you're microscopic
You make up everything, everything inside my body
I need to learn about you, I swear I'll learn all the organelles

Animal cells, they are the best kind there are
They have all the organelles but the central vacuole
They don't have plastids, they don't have cell walls
But they do have everything else

Oh the nucleus, you hold DNA
You control the cell, every single day
Surrounded by the nuclear envelope, you're protected
In the nucleolus, DNA is changed, RNA is made

Now the mitochondria, they make all the ATP
From organic molecules they transfer all the energy
All around you there's a phospholipid membrane
Can't live without you making all the ATP

Yeah and the endoplasmic reticulum
Made of sacs and tubes and transports molecules
Rough ER producing phospholipids and proteins
Covered in ribosomes and helps keep the cell alive

Now there's a smooth ER, chillin' with no ribosomes
Not abundant in the cell, but builds up cholesterol
Found in heart muscles and releases the calcium
Detoxifies drugs and poisons, and goes along with the rough ER

And there's the golgi apparatus too
Made of flattened sacs and this is what it do,
Packages up molecules,
Labels them and adds organic compounds

Cytoskeleton, all across the cytosol
Tubes and filaments, give shape from the inside
Well there are some parts; I hope you get the picture
Microtubules, microfilaments, and intermediate filaments

Plasma membrane or cell; that aint the issue
Its got several functions; decides if molecules can enter
It separates reactions from the outer environment
Hydrophilic, hydrophobic, its made of phospholipids

But guess who builds the proteins
Theyre ribosomes; some free, others on the ER
They have subunits; one large and one small
Each made of protein and ribosomal RNA

Last but not least, weve got the vesicles around
There are several types: small and round
Lysosomes, peroxisomes, and specialized ones
Breaking down some things; neutralizing others

We are organelles; we make up the cells
We can do anything; we let your body function
Weve got different names, shapes, and weve all got different functions
You want us forever, you dont want a mutation for us

We are in a fluid, its called the cytoplasm
Its within the membrane, cell or plasma, doesn't matter
Youll be living, as long as were working up
So we say the same thing every single time:
