Every Christmas for the last 30 years I have watched this movie and every time I hit this scene, well it's waterworks.

Agree with others that this is the definitive movie rendition. The melody was closely borrowed by Otto Kelland for the classic 1947 Newfoundland ballad "Let Me Fish Off Cape St. Mary's", a beautiful song in its own right.

This particular version of Barbara Allen is one of the very few versions that get me every time.

Along with thousands of others, I have searched everywhere to find out who she is. The closest we've come to an answer is a message left in an IMDB forum by chipster_22001 on Nov 27 2006.
"My Uncle worked for casting director Maude Spector, and while he wasn't directly involved in this film, he did keep extensive notes on all the projects she worked on. The only thing I could find in the production information was this: Maid (Nephew's House): Frances Arden."

It has become a family tradition to watch almost every rendition of the Christmas Carol, from Alistair Sim to Michael Caine to Albert Finney and Jim Carrey. While each have their own distinction, I will always say that Alistair is my favorite, if just for this song and how Ebenezer develops such a change of character. Merry Christmas to all, and may the Lord Bless you!

I think the maid who opened the door for Ebinezer did a masterfull acting job without saying a single word, I wonder who she was? nice scene, nice song thanks for posting

Christmas isn't complete at our house till we've viewed this. It gets better every time I see it. I love that you posted this scene, which is mysteriously wonderful. God bless us, every one!

I love this movie. it is by far the best Christmas Carol ever made. no other compares and no others can even come close.

And if the nameless maid had not nodded for him to enter the room, what might have happened instead... Little gems like that make this movie so special. The best of the many Christmas Carols.

@windstorm1000 Thanks for the kind words. And a Merry Christmas to you, too.
The very best "Christmas Carol"/"Scrooge". And the best "Barbara Allen". Thanks for this.

Through the years, I've watched this outstanding version of the timeless Dickens story a zillion times. Never, ever get tired of it.
