I met Troy in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. He has been homeless on and off for twenty five years, which he says is the result of being abused as a child.

Troy has a strong faith in Jesus. He believes it's through that belief that he receives help and support.

Troy wants us to know that homelessness is a symptom of mental illness and trauma caused by the challenges of life.

Troy is a good man. He just needs a chance and some real hope. Faith based organizations need to be careful to teach more than Jesus. Often our homeless friends will refuse needed services saying "Jesus will provide all our needs". Thing is, Jesus works through people. We need to be real with people and not present ideals, although well meaning, that could cause harm and keep people on the streets. I am not a bible expert or a theologian but I am sure Jesus wants no one to be homeless!

  • I have to admit i was distracted by what appears to be a guy lying on the ground behind Troy. He wasn't moving and I'm concerned if he was sleeping, hurt, sick or God forbid dead.

  • Godspeed Troy

  • I like this man! He has kind eyes, and speaks very will. He is almost handsome in a rugged way too, like a cowboy from the old west......Best wishes to you Troy! You deserve a comfortable place to rest and a warm meal every day! I enjoy hearing your wise words!

  • troy's right on,

just get off the 'biological' trip.

  • @Thenewyorkcritic move to north korea move to turkmenistan, and then tell me how little voting counts.

  • Sometimes family and friends disappear when they are afraid of the truth.

  • @gramps2matt He's breathing you can see. He's trying to catch a few shut eyes...

  • i totally know the "we dont do that here"....although I am not homeless anymore, my experience then has taught me alot, still stuggling now though and even tryin to advocate for myself, others and my son with special needs. it seems like some of the "systematically" places and ppl always find a way to shove us off on someone/else to deal with our kind less, yet manage to still accept funds and donations. and then we have to go in circles to find the answers they probaly knew the entire time.

  • Did anyone check to see if the guy lying by the house was breathing?

  • It would be best to depend on friends or family members than be homeless. If we would bring back assembly jobs back in the USA, there would be less homeless and more jobs available.

  • @Thenewyorkcritic There are political parties in Canada that do fight for the homeless, so it's not quite as dire as in America. Thankfully we have a social democratic political party that competes with the Conservative party.
