4th grade students at Klem Road South Elementary School urge policymakers not to open the St. Lawrence River to shipping during icing conditions. They are concerned that shipping on the River when water levels are low and 2" or more of ice is present, will increase the chance of an accident. An accident could result in oil spilling into the River and cause damage to the environment. Students share their recommendations to follow when determining the dates for allowing shipping on the St. Lawrence.

  • Dear Klem South Students,

You have created a masterpiece which reflects the sentiments of many a River Rat, a term affectionately used to describe those of us born and raised on the St.Lawrence River! Recently, the Thousand Islands Sun included pictures of the first ships to navigate the Seaway. We share your concerns. Thank you for caring, sharing and taking the time to help preserve our precious resource! Well done!

  • I don't agree with all your points but your video caused me to stop and think about my own position.

    Well done!

  • These 4th grade students would be interested in hearing your points of disagreement. This would help to extend their learning by considering different perspectives. We're glad we made you think!

  • Caroline,

The students thank you for taking the time to watch their video and to share your comments. Please share the link with others in your community who are also concerned about the current policy procedures.

  • Beth,

The students have written letters and sent emails to many policymakers and elected officials to inform them of their work and to link them to the video. We haven't heard back yet from anybody, but we are still hopeful. We're so glad you commented!

  • Hopefully the kids' reward will be knowing that their work will make a difference to help protect the river and surrounding communities. Thanks for commenting.
