The third in a series of workshops moderated by Dr. Susan Massad that examines the contributions of philosophy and postmodernism to addressing the health care crisis in America. With non-traditional treatment approaches like homeopathy, acupuncture, therapeutic massage and meditation becoming more and more popular, American policy makers and health consumers and professionals are facing the challenging question of what a more fully integrative approach to health might look like. Can western and alternative medicine merely be combined? Can the language divide between the two be bridged?
Please join us for a conversation about the philosophical and conceptual issues that must be explored in the creation of a truly integrative practice of medicine -- including the relationship of mind-body, subjective-objective, particularistic-holistic, and art-science. Traditional and alternative health care providers and consumers (and everyone in between) are welcome.
Susan Massad is a medical educator and general internist at the Brooklyn Hospital Center. She has taught and lectured widely on postmodern and humanistic approaches to the practice of medicine. In 2004, she was named by New York Magazine as one of the NYCs top-10 doctors for her expertise in doctor-patient communication and her groundbreaking work in bringing improv and performance into the medical education of resident physicians.
Dr Jeffrey Morrison is a practicing physician who has successfully bridged the alternative/traditional divide. As a champion of nutritional approaches to both healthcare and to preventing and reversing degenerative diseases, Dr. Morrison's treatments focus on enhancing the body's ability to heal and detoxify itself.
Mary Abrams is a skilled and talented movement therapist who has taught the practice of Continuum and Jungle Gym during her 20 years of teaching movement. She pays dynamic and detailed attention to breath, sensation, emotions and the creative process in her work in individual and group settings with a wide range of people/problems.
Gwen Lowenheim is a talented educator and social therapist who has been a member the Institute staff for 20 years, where she is on the faculty of the Developing Teachers Fellowship Program. She is intimately familiar with alternative and traditional medical approaches, having used both over the past 25 years to live a full and productive life with chronic fatigue syndrome.
Dr. Jessie Fields is a general internist currently on staff at St. Lukes Hospital. Dr. Fields has worked for many years in inner city communities, where she practices using a western medicine prospective that has been influenced by her studies in the philosophically oriented social therapeutics of the Institute.
