Zangief (Gunze) Beasting @ Star Cup 11Oct2009 pt1/2

Another great performance by a Gief master, who manages to reach the quarter finals of the 2009 Star Cup. Gunze uses the lariat frequently to trick the opponent into thinking they can safely throw projectiles or sweep Zangief, but since Gunze executes this move from a safe range, opponents are often caught out. After the lariat start-up, Zangief can be swept very easily if the opponent is in range but moving Zangief backwards and forwards while in the lariat makes the opponent either walk into the lariat thats still executing (because Gunze moved forward) or missing their sweep (because Gunze moved backwards). Some opponents opt to stand their ground and throw another projectile and completely underestimate the range of the lariat's hit-box (if Gief moves forward continuously) and still get knocked over. Gunze and Pony have very different styles and have both had their successes in the highest level of st comps. Its great to see two different styles being used Just as effectively as each other, this goes to show you dont always have to copy the best to have the same success rate.

The 1-hit Daze Head butt has been in Zangief's arsenal since Street Fighter 2 Hyper fighting. Its quite hard to land because it misses any standing opponent. In SF4 they made the hit-box bigger, making it much easier land

zangief didn't use all his moves, i got bored pretty quick, but i suppose when your in a comp you stick to few simple moves to risk confusing yourself, however many chances he could've used the 360+k move to run and grab the opponent whilst they blocked

also the deejay player was smart, used a character to counter the spinning lariat... its hard to sweep if 'gief' just uses it to dodge a fireball but moves away from a sweep, a slide can move forward and thus counters lariat

How does he do those 360 piledrivers without jumping so easily?

I can only do it on SFIV with ease.
